Symbols

Your literature book defines “symbol” thus: "A person, place, thing, or event that stands both for itself and for something beyond itself. Many symbols have become widely recognized. . . public symbols. But writers often invent new, personal symbols whose meaning is revealed in their work" (1472).

What persons, places, or things function beyond themselves as symbols in Lord of the Flies? Give examples from the text to support your assertions. You may also offer textual evidence to support your peers’ suggested symbols.
