Your literature book defines “symbol” thus: "A person, place, thing, or event that stands both for itself and for something beyond itself. Many symbols have become widely recognized. . . public symbols. But writers often invent new, personal symbols whose meaning is revealed in their work" (1472).
What persons, places, or things function beyond themselves as symbols in Lord of the Flies? Give examples from the text to support your assertions. You may also offer textual evidence to support your peers’ suggested symbols.

The signal fire is a symbol of the boys and their hope. Like the boys it rages out of control sometimes, like when it burned up the side of the mountain and the young boy is lost and it also often goes out when they lose hope or are not thinking of getting off of the island. The conch symbolizes order and authority. The class of boys themselves symbolizes society the littluns symbolize common people and the older kids symbolize the government.
The conch shell represents power and order among the group.
Jack represents primal instinct and desire. Piggy represents science and reason. Ralph represents a balance between the two. These characters represent the Freudian ideas of the id, ego, and superego.
It is a beautiful island before the boys arrive.Once they arrive they start destroying the island. When they first make a fire they burn down part of the forest because they let the fire get out of control. This symbolizes the earthly destruction we humans are doing via pollution.
The conch shell is used as a symbol of civiliztion in the story. In the meetings the boy who is holding the shell is the one who speaks. The shell keeps the boys together, and when they crashed the shell became a big psrt of what helped keep them together
The "beastie" itself represents the fear within the children on the island.
The conch is a symbol of law and order. Whichever boy holds the conch is the only one allowed to speak, and this creats organization and discipline in the group.
The fire that is always emphasized in the story is a symbol of hope and it also shows leadership. Another symbol in the story is the beast, the beast shows the fear that is involved with the boys. The beast represents the fear that they have as they are alone on the island. The pigs represent the wild side the boys have. The hunters are the wild ones that always want to be out in the wild hunting and being wild and not caring at all about being rescued.
The killing of the pig could be compared to Eve biting the apple. It's like the original sin. After they kill the first pig, everything starts to go downhill.
The conch is a symbol for order and government. They try to use the conch to keep order on hte island. The fire is a symbol for life. When the fire goes out they start to lose hope.
The conch is a symbol of order and leadership within the boys. Without the conch the boys would have never found each other and would not have been able to establish order.not done
I believe the conch shell is a sybol of authority. Who ever has the conch shell is in charge, kindof like a microphone
The conch represents a moment of power.
